![]() ![]() Scar forces the Hyenas and the Lionesses to over-hunt the other animals, causing both species to starve. The environmental message is subtle and intelligently woven in as a vital part of the film, as environmentalism was and still is a major political issue. The "Circle of Life" phrase/theme is a magical expression describing both the importance of duty and the balance of nature. Every setting is beautifully painted and deserves to be placed in art gallery. The symbolism in each setting (the pridelands under Mufasa, the elephant graveyard, the desert, the rainforest, the pridelands under Scar, the pridelands under Simba) and how that sets the mood in each scene is powerful yet easily understood. They even make Nala and Simba cross Necks and lick each other rather than kiss. The exaggerated and expressive designs are mixed perfectly with realistic movement (except for Timon's bipedalism which makes him seem more humanlike). The art and the animation are outstanding the way the camera moves with Zazu when he flies make you feel like you are flying across the Savannah along with him. The instrumental music score is also amazingly beautiful and really nice to hear, it makes you really feel like you are on Safari. The voice actors (both for the talking and singing parts, and young & old versions of Simba and Nala) are excellent and give emotionally powerful performances. The Circle of Life with its mix of Zulu and English lyrics is a great way to start things off and sets up the themes of the film perfectly, I Just Can't Wait to Be King is a fun and humorous song with a serious message of Be careful what you wish for, Be Prepared is a great villain song about Scar's evil plan to take over the land, Hakuna Matata is a wonderful song about the carefree hedonistic lifestyle of Timon and Pumbaa and Can You Feel the Love Tonight is a wonderful song about the budding romance between Simba and Nala. All the songs are memorable, catchy, enjoyable and most importantly, they all convey information about the characters and the plot. Whilst a few Disney animated films had done this before, the Lion King really made it a common thing to do. This was one of the earliest animated films to have used well-known musicians to make part of the soundtrack (in this case, Lebo M,Elton John and Tim Rice). Let's discuss the production and setting details of the film before discussing the characters and story, as the former is easier to discuss and less open to personal interpretation. With the help of Nala the Lioness, Timon the Meerkat, Pumbaa the warthog and Rafiki the Mandrill, can Simba stop Scar’s hyena army and take his place as the rightful heir?
